What I Learned In My 1st Year of Blogging

Hello everyone! While I still can’t believe my blog has been live for over a year (can someone please tell me where that time went?) I thought I would share some of the things I’ve learned about blogging.  I feel like I should start out by saying that after a year, I still don’t feel like an expert. But, I have read a TON about blogging in the past year, and have learned so much about my hobby!

What I Learned In My First Year of Blogging

Be Consistent

When I decided to start this blog, I knew I wanted to start out by posting once a week on Wednesdays, and the post goes up at 6am. It has worked great for me. I know exactly how much time I have to work on a post and have developed a routine. Plus, my audience knows exactly what to expect. In my social media profiles, I say when post will be published to reinforce it. The week of the blog’s birthday I put up 2 posts and sent out a newsletter (which you should sign up for below), and I felt like I was going non-stop. It made me realize how happy I am with the balance I have now. If you are starting a blog, don’t set the bar higher than you can reach, unless you are committed to making it happen. Don’t say you are going to post 5 days a week unless you know that you can get it done!

It’s a slow process

Don’t rush yourself. It takes a lot of work to keep up a blog, social media, and everything else. You aren’t going to suddenly have 1 million pageviews overnight. And that’s okay! Trust me, you probably don’t want 1 million people looking at your first post.  Yes there are bloggers out there making thousands of dollars in a month, but they’ve most likely been blogging for a very long time. Blogging isn’t a get rich quick thing, it takes a lot of time. Focus on where you want your blog to be, and don’t compare yourself or your blog to others.

there is always room for improvement

It’s true- I always feel like my job is never done, there is always something to be done! In my notebook, I keep a list of things to do, update old posts, add an About Me section to the sidebar, and so many other things! I know that if I commit to working a bit at a time I’ll be happy, but there is always more that can be done. I know that I’ll never be “done” learning, and if you are starting a blog, you should accept that fact too!

remember- it’s yours!

I really do think it’s important to not compare yourself to others. Create goals and focus on what you want to achieve for yourself. Take advice from others, but don’t take it too seriously. It will be different if you are creating a business (you want to take that seriously). I am writing this blog for me, so I’m not going to let others tell me what to do with it. I will take suggestions of course, but not let something I created become dictated by someone else. In my tea talk post, I explained a little about this.

Schedule in advance, but be open to change

This is such an important point for me. I generally brainstorm months worth of posts in advance and put them into my planner, but definitely change my mind from time to time! I tend to look at the types of posts because I do a mixture of “personal” posts and Disney themed posts, and I try to strike a balance between the two. But sometimes I get an idea and run with it, so some things get pushed back. For example, last week’s post I was really excited about, so it went straight into the schedule! Currently I have posts planned through the end of the year, and have a notebook for anything A Disney Obsession related. I keep a list of post ideas and video ideas, then when I have about a month of posts left in the schedule, I sit down to brainstorm. Personally I like knowing that I have a lot of material to cover, and find scheduling works for me. Especially when you are getting started, create a schedule for your posts! If you run out of ideas, go back and update an old post, and make sure to let everyone know it’s been updated!

host a giveaway, asap!

Oh how I wish I had known this a year ago. I recently hosted my first giveaway, and I couldn’t believe how much traffic it brought to my blog! I was completely blown away. While I think it has a little to do with what you are giving away, I think it attracts readers in a big way. I hope to host more giveaways in the future!

Don’t forget social media!

It is so easy to get caught up in all of the things you have to balance when owning a blog, but social media is really important. I think the platform that you choose to focus on will depend on the type of blog you have, but you definitely need to post regularly to get anywhere. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not on social media as much as I should be, but it is something I want to work on. For me, Instagram is the platform I tend to post to the most (and that’s still not even a lot). For Facebook and Twitter, I use Hootsuite to schedule posts. Wednesday mornings when the blog goes up, I schedule a post for the early afternoon and know that it is taken care of. I’ve tried to make it part of a routine so it’s second nature and I won’t forget! Speaking of which are you following me on social media? You should be! All my social media links are at the top of the sidebar 🙂

I hope you have enjoyed some tips and tricks I’ve learned in the past year! I have learned so much from reading other blogs so I figured I would return the favour!

Let me know if you’d like to see more of the behind the scenes process behind the blog, if you find those things interesting! If you have a blog, what is the most important thing you have learned? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you so much for reading, and supporting my hobby!

Plan With Me! (Week of July 18th, 2016)

Hello friends! I’m changing it up a bit this week! Since I posted my Erin Condren haul, I thought I might go a bit more in depth with how I use my planner, and what a week of planning looks like for me. Today’s post is going to be very short- and the video (much) longer than usual. I’m showing you the entire process of planning, using the kit that came in my July Scribbles Monthly. The kit this month was just over $53 (with exchange and international shipping). I thought I would show you exactly how I use the stickers, and why I plan the way I do. I am definitely a functional planner, and love my to-do lists as you can see in the video. Just a warning, this is my first Plan With Me so I feel like it was a little unorganized and I rambled a lot. Plus my camera stopped recording because I was talking for so long. Keep that in mind when watching the video below!

For $10 off your first Erin Condren order, use this link!

I hope you enjoyed a look at the planning process I go through each week, definitely let me know if you would like to see more. Below is the finished layout for the week! It is a lot busier with stickers than I normally plan, but I wanted to try go full out!

Plan With Me

Do you have  planner? If you do, how do you use it? If not, what do you use to keep yourself organized? Let me know in the comments!

Thank you for watching and reading!

Empties- July 2016

Hello everyone! Today I’m sharing a new type of post with you, and empties post! I’m showing you some products that I’ve used up in the last few months. I’ll let you know any thoughts on them, if I would repurchase (or already have), and if I would recommend them! I’ve found links for pretty much everything, so just hover over the product to click the link, or click the picture! Okay let’s get started!

Empties- July 2016

Shower Products

Satsuma Shower Gel– I generally get one of these jumbo shower gels for Christmas each year, and have a stockpile of them! Using it conservatively it lasted over a year, which is awesome. It’s my favourite scent from the Body Shop, so I love using it. I would recommend it, and haven’t personally repurchased it, but like I said I have a few waiting to be used up.

Tea Tree Oil Squeaky Clean Scrub– I bought this on a whim to wash my face in the shower, and I love it! I’m usually not the biggest fan on minty products, or ones that tingle your face, but I really like this one! It leaves my skin feeling refreshed and clean. It was out of stock for a while, but I have since repurchased it and bought an extra just in case!

TreSemme Shampoo- I’ve never really noticed a difference in my hair when using different types of shampoo, so I’m trying different kinds to see if I do notice any differences. I have wavy hair so that was what made me lean towards this one, but again I didn’t really notice a difference. I would buy it again if I wasn’t trying other kinds.

Skin Care Products

Vitamin E Cream Cleanser– Now we’re getting into my daily routine products. I use this first to remove makeup and wash my face. I have already repurchased it, and I love this line by The Body Shop (as you can probably tell!) I generally stock up on all things Body Shop when they offer Buy 3 Get 3 Free (which is fairly often). It is a great deal!

Vitamin E Toner- I use this next with a cotton pad to further remove any makeup and clean my face. I have already repurchased it :). I couldn’t find it on the website, so I’m not sure if it has been discontinued, but I’m glad I stocked up!

Vitamin E Illuminating Moisture Cream– I use this moisturizer in the morning before I put my makeup on, and it keeps my face from drying out through the day. I have repurchased it and would recommend it as well! The only thing to note is the “illuminating” factor. It does brighten your face, so keep that in mind when using. I cover it up with my foundation.

Vitamin E Night Cream– I use this at night as the last step. It keeps the moisture in and leaves my skin feeling awesome! I have repurchased and would recommend it.

Almay Foundation- I’ve bought about three of these, and still have one left. Since I bought it I’ve switched to the True Match Foundation that I mentioned in my May Monthly Favourites. Shoppers Drug Mart doesn’t carry Almay products anymore, so I don’t think I would go out of my way to repurchase this foundation. I think for a lightweight liquid foundation it’s a good start, but I like the other type more.

Urban Decay Setting Spray– This is the only setting spray I’ve ever used, and I like it! I am just waiting to repurchase it again, but the travel size I used up much faster than I thought. The bottle recommends spray 2-4 times, and I would definitely say use 2. Spraying 4 times if definitely why I used it up so fast. I think I will keep the travel size bottle for travelling, and buy the larger size next.

Marcele Eye-Makeup Remover- This is my favourite eye makeup remover! Its gentle on my skin and doesn’t leave the skin around my eyes feeling oily! I just lightly hold a cotton pad over my eye, and gently wipe away all the makeup! I have re-purchased it and would definitely recommend it.

Aveeno- I got this travel size hand cream to keep at my desk at work, and I went through it fairly quickly. I didn’t love the smell, and I didn’t feel like the moisture sunk into my hand like other creams I’ve tried. I wouldn’t buy it again.

Lip Products

EOS Lip Balms- I’ve used up three of these in maybe the last year. My lips get really dry so I have lip balm everywhere. I felt like I had to apply a lot of this lip balm for it to work, and it was awkward to apply when it got near the bottom. For these reasons I probably won’t buy these again. I think I’ll stick to the Burt’s Bees one I mentioned last week.

Lip Smacker– I’ve had this since high school (it stayed in my winter jacket). I think it was Strawberry Banana but the label wore off. Now I wouldn’t repurchase unless I wanted to relive my childhood, and I’m sure some of you would feel the same!

Beach Babe Lip Balms– I bought these along with some other things from Tone It Up, and I did not like them. They are made with coconut oil I believe, but they just felt grainy. I wouldn’t recommend them or re-purchase.

Nivea Chap Stick- I got this pack of two, and hated it. It felt really thick going on my lips, and left them white. Like I was intentionally wearing white lipstick or something. It’s the only thing on this list that I didn’t use up completely.

Hair Products

Garnier Fructus Hair Spray- This hairspray is no longer available in the “hold” that I originally purchased, so I’ve moved on to try something else. I liked it, but don’t want to recommend something that isn’t available anymore! I like hairsprays that hold  nicely, but don’t leave your hair feeling crunchy or hard. This one smelled nice too.

Healthy Sexy Hair- This product I found on Little Miss Momma’s blog, (I pretty much bought everything on her list) when I cut my hair a few years ago. It took me about a year to use up this product, and I liked it. Again with hair products I don’t find a huge difference between products, so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend it. I’m trying something else now.

I also filmed a video to go along with this post, check it out below!

I hope you enjoying a look at some of the products I’ve used up lately! This type of post won’t happen very often, but I hope to post another Empties in the future! I also am planning on doing some “get ready with me” type videos, showing my morning and nighttime routines, so keep an eye out for those in the future!

Let me know in the comments if you’ve used any of these products lately, and what you thought! Also, if there’s any new posts you’d like to see on the blog, let me know!
